Lost At Sea In The Social Media Ocean

Content isn't just King, it's the only thing!

That paraphrase and misquote of Vince Lombardi's most famously misquoted saying has been true for the web since day one, and is still true today. But alas most people who jump into the Social Media Ocean have no clue how to develop content for their businesses or their own personal brand. That is why we get too many worthless posts of people's pets, cars, what they are eating, how much they have drunk, or are drinking at the moment, and other such meaningless rot.

It's not that posting personal information and thoughts are wrong or even bad, one just needs to be careful what they are sharing. For someone in business this goes double as you never know when some activity you and your friends find acceptable offends someone else and they decide that they will never do business with you or your company.

So what should someone, especially someone in business should post?

For starters one should limit themselves to no more than 6-8 posts per site per day. Share some exciting, but nonconfidential information about what is going on within your company. Offer tips on using your company's products or services. Share some industry news and other data that will enhance your standing amongst your followers.

Have a clear cut policy and strategy on what is acceptable and what is not for your employees to share. Get together at the beginning of the week and work out exactly what you want out there, leaving room for unexpected and new developments of course. But still these should go through a filtering process to make sure the message is consistent and factual ( there are too many rumors and innuendos out there that get passed around. Don't get caught n the fray and jump too quickly on the old rumor mill bandwagon).

Handle any questionable actions or bad news as fast as you can. Also don't try to massage the news as people will find you out and your credibility will be suspect going forward. Just tell the truth and tell what plan you have for correcting the situation.

By planning and being aware of what is going on in the Social Media Ocean, one can easily navigate through the quagmire and find a clear sailing lane for themselves and their company.

Create quality content and you will never have to worry about being lost again.
